All of our driveway grates are made with 316 grade stainless steel. To be defined as stainless steel, the steel must be an alloy with a minimum of 10.5% chromium content by mass. 316 grade stainless steel goes beyond that with a chromium content of 17 to 25% which is important because it is the chromium that gives stainless steel its unique corrosion resistant properties.


316 grade stainless steel is also referred to as marine grade stainless steel because it is commonly used in marine applications due to its ability to resist corrosion. 316 grade stainless steel was also used on the exterior of the Petronas Twin Towers which are two of the world’s tallest skyscrapers. In industrial applications, 316 grade stainless steel is used exclusively in the fabrication of reactor pressure vessels for boiling water reactors because of its strength and its resistance to corrosion. Of course strength, hygiene and corrosion resistance are also the same reasons that we use this material exclusively for all of our drainage grates.
